Card games always have been part of films as they have added a peculiar flavor to the plot with its twist and turns. When included, it becomes a delight on screen. Be it Hollywood or Bollywood; we’ve had some movies which brought to screen the actions and adventures we generally see in card games. Though the numbers are less, they did create an impact. While most Indian films have a scene or two where characters play rummy or other card games, their Hollywood counterparts have made films with card games as a central plot.

As card games are able to present compelling narratives deeply embedded in the native culture, most such movies hit the bulls’ eye as far as box office is concerned. Here are a few movies that are themed around card games or atleast have card games as in the general plot.

1.     Casino Royale:

The twenty-first film in the James Bond series is all about Poker. This film is the first to star Daniel Craig as the fictional MI6 agent 007. In this movie, Bond must defeat a private banker funding terrorists at the high stakes games of poker. Poker fans have reasons to celebrate as the movie included scenes that have in-depth action scenes. The poker-playing scenes gave the same feel, just like the action scenes in the movie. Released in the year 2006, the movie is considered one of the best in the series and also finest in this category.  

2.     Rounders:

Released in 1998, this American drama is about a young law student Mike McDermott, played by Matt Damon. It is one another movie on the list about poker game! Mike is stuck in-between his girlfriend to whom he has promised not to step into the game and a friend who needs his help to clear off debts. Though the movie sunk at the box-office, the movie attained cult status since then often being labeled as the quintessential poker movie. The movie talks in length about the importance of bankroll management.

3.     Teen Patti:

This Bollywood movie is with one of the biggest stars in Indian Cinema- Amitabh Bachchan. The movie released in 2010, runs around Venkat Subramaniam (Amitabh Bachchan), a genius math professor. The Indian thriller film is about a professor who is trying to write a thesis on probability and at one point, is guided by his friend Shantanu (played by Madhavan) to experiment with his theory in real life. A decision is made after a lot of hesitations to apply the theories in Teen Patti, a card game. If you are a great fan of Teen Patti- the scenes in which Venkat's theories is used to play the game is a treat to watch.

The movie released in the year 2008 is inspired by a true story of the MIT Blackjack Team. The story revolves around a brilliant student, Ben Campbell (played by Jim Sturgess) of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He faces issues when he has to pay his tuition fee. He joins a group of students led by Professor Mickey Rosa (Kevin Spacey), who trains the students to win big in Las Vegas at Blackjack. 5.     The Cincinnati Kid:

This movie is for people who enjoy playing stud poker. Released in 1965, the game is considered the best poker movie to date. The movie is based on the novel by Richard Jessup.  The young poker player Eric Stoner (played by Steve Mcqueen) is also known as the "Cincinnati kid," aims to win the best players around him. This makes him face Lancey "The Man" Howard (played by Edward G. Robinson). How is he going to prove the world? - The remaining part of the movie.
